THE previously elected Secretary for Lauru Amateur Boxing Association, Simon Polotovae has vowed with optimism to revive boxing in Choiseul province as the Solomon Islands nears the hosting the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara.
Polotovae, 53 aimed to revive boxing competitions in the province, since he sees highly talented boxers being deprived by the Lauru Amateur Boxing Association (LABA).
“I am seriously considering a new roadmap to strengthen plans to revive boxing competitions in the province. Choiseul province has been without a boxing competition and I have decided to revive the sport,” he said.
Simon Polotovae has recently been invited by the President Patrick Morris of the Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association (SIABA) to discuss the possible future of amateur boxing in the Choiseul province.
He said since the establishment of the LABA, the Association is still without a constitution or a strategic boxing development plan to prepare young and talented boxers in Choiseul province.
“Our system is unreliable and our Association is not open with the sport. At the provincial level, we need to recorrect and draft action plans to enable and expose our boxers to the national level.
“I strongly believe that this is the right time to revive amateur boxing competitions especially as the country looks forward to hosting the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara.
“Boxing is a popular sport in Choiseul province that is heavily rooted in our society with pride for generations back in the early 1990s. Previously, our amateur boxers won five gold medals in the 2016 Solomon Games in Honiara.
“I will again speak with the executives of the Lauru Amateur Boxing Association to organize a boxing competition for this year (2020),” the Secretary added.
Although it will be a challenge for Lauru Amateur Boxing Association, Simon Polotovae acknowledged the Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association for inviting him for such important discussion that will pave a forward for the boxing community in Choiseul province.
“I’m delighted to be invited to this positive meeting and to renew the relationship partnership between Lauru Amateur Boxing Association and Solomon Islands Amateur Boxing Association.
“The meeting will help the Association to re-establish a stronger foundation and pathway for our young talented athletes to have access to competitive boxing events in the province.
“This we hope to have an organized boxing competition to prepare top contenders for medals in the 2023 Pacific Games in Honiara,” he said.
