The 2017 Avaiki netball championship now reaches its grand final stage schedule for tomorrow (Friday 1st), following an entertaining semi final show down today.
Defending champions Ward 9 will take on Ward 8 in the Polynesia Island netball grand final.
Ward 9 comfortably beat Ward 4 with a huge score margin, 73-23 to book the final spot.
Ward 8 also managed to secure a win today, in an equally contested semi final showdown with Ward 5, which both teams replying for the lead throughout the quarters as the deciding winner came out narrowly with 54-53 score line.
Ward 9 head coach, Eva Pongi said the combination of her girls proved the advantage again as being undefeated throughout the weeklong competition.
“These girls have been playing together for a long time, especially in the Honiara Netball Association (HNA) league. And it so happens that they are from the same Ward (Bellona).
Mrs. Pongi says that her team’s early preparation before the championship also an advantage for their success reaching the grand final for the second time.
“We started our training months ahead before the tournament, unlike some teams in the competition who only took weeks to prepare.
She added that her girls are also related, thus their mutual understanding of each other is an advantage.
“I don’t have the pressure that my team will lose. I’m confident.
“Taking into consideration and advantage these girls pose in trainings and their game plans, it’s our focus as a champion to retain the title.
Likewise, Ward 8 Head coach, Delma Nori praised her team performance to again book a grand final spot this year, despite their catch up fixtures of the tournament.
“Last week our team did not play, and all throughout this week we did not miss a day till we grand final tomorrow (Friday), whereas other teams had their rest and trainings throughout this week.
“I just cross my fingers hoping we could perform better in the grand final, hopefully we could now claim the title.
With a sharp understanding of their grand final opponents yet Mrs. Nori believes her girls can make a positive result.
“Ward 9 is a very good team, but I’ll make sure my girls try their best of ability against them. But I’d say let the best team win,” Says Mrs. Nori.
The fourth and third playoffs between Ward 5 and Ward 4 will commence at 2 pm followed by the grand final at 4 pm respectively.
